The Center has approved the purchase of eight Next Generation Corvettes (NGCs) for the Indian Navy for Rs 36,000 crore. The approval is part of a plan to procure military equipment and platforms worth Rs 76,390 crore from domestic manufacturers, led by Defense Minister Rajnath Singh.
The NGCs would be built based on a new Indian Navy in-house design, using the latest shipbuilding technology, the ministry said in a statement. “Under this project, a pan-India secure network for digitizing various surface operations and aviation, logistics, finance and HR processes of the Coast Guard will be established,” he said. he adds.
What is a Corvette?
A corvette is the smallest type of warship, falling below the frigate warship class. It is among the most agile ships along with missile boats, anti-submarine ships, coastal patrol boats and fast attack warships.
Although the Royal Navy began using tiny warships in the 1650s, the French navy was the first to mention a corvette warship in the 1670s. Small warships in the English navy were called sloops at the time, and the navy did not have corvette warships in its fleet until the 1830s. Corvettes date back to the 18th and 19th centuries when they were widely used in naval warfare duels that were fought in high sea.
Corvettes were square-rigged, three-masted ships comparable to frigates and ships of the line, but with only about twenty guns on the upper deck. Corvettes were often used as dispatchers among warships, but they also guarded merchant ships and displayed a country’s flag in remote areas.
Modern corvettes, on the other hand, are of a different breed, weighing between 500 and 1,000 tons and equipped with missiles, torpedoes and machine guns. They serve in minor fleets around the world as anti-submarine, anti-aircraft and coastal patrol vessels.
The Kamorta The class corvettes, also known as Project 28, are currently in service with the Indian Navy. These ships are built at Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers in Kolkata and have an anti-submarine mission. The four Kamorta class corvettes of the Indian Navy are INS Kamorta, INS Kadmatt, INS Kiltan and INS Kavaratti. The first of them was ordered in 2014, and the last will be delivered in 2020.
Surveillance missions, escort operations, deterrence, surface action group operations, search and assault and coastal defense will all be covered by next-generation Corvettes. It should be noted that these missions will be in addition to the anti-submarine missions currently carried out by the Navy’s existing Corvettes.
According to the Defense Acquisition Board’s AoN (Acceptance of Necessity), these next-generation corvettes will be built based on Indian Navy’s new in-house design, using state-of-the-art shipbuilding technology, and will contribute government security initiative. and Growth for All in the Region (SAGAR).
What does it mean ?
This is the latest boost for Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Make in India initiative. It will be the first time that warships will be fully planned by the Navy’s Naval Design Directorate and built by an Indian shipyard under competitive bidding – meaning the private sector will be allowed in to tender, unlike in the past when a shipyard was appointed. , as quoted by Indian Express.
India’s plan to establish a 175-ship Indian Navy includes these futuristic corvettes as part of Make in India, with 39 of the 41 ships and submarines currently on order being built in Indian shipyards.
The Indian Navy specified that the corvettes have a range of more than 4,000 nautical miles and are capable of cruising at 27 knots. The single-hull corvette, 120 meters long, must have weak radar, acoustic, magnetic, visual and infrared signatures. The corvettes will be equipped with an active towed sonar and two light torpedo launchers. The new warships will eventually replace the Khukri and Kora class corvettes.
