AN / PRC-161 BATS-D radio can dramatically enhance coordination and communications between the United States, the Five Eyes partners and coalition forces operating at the forefront of tactics

Viasat, a global communications company, and a competitor of the homeland security awards program ‘ASTORS’ 2018, has received National Security Agency (NSA) clearance for immediate use by Five Eyes partners (FVEY) and coalition forces worldwide for the Battlefield Awareness and Targeting System – Landed ( BATS-D) of the company.

The Radio Viasat BATS-D is known to the United States Department of Defense (DoD) as AN / PRC-161, bridges a critical gap between air and ground forces by providing real-time fused air / ground situational awareness for coordinate and direct forces instantly via machine-to-machine interface.

The terminal provides combatants at the forefront of tactics with secure and reliable access to integrated air and ground data for enhanced situational awareness capabilities and improved close air support communications.

With better communications, combatants can engage enemy targets more quickly and reduce the risk of fratricidal incidents.

Ken Peterman, President, Government Systems, Viasat

“Viasat has a deep and enduring commitment to work with allies and coalition partners to improve combatant security by improving mission effectiveness and communications,” said Ken peterman, President, Government Systems, Viasat.

“The Viasat AN / PRC-161 BATS-D is the world’s first and only Link 16 portable radio. It is designed to meet the military’s urgent need for a small, secure Link 16 device, capable of being used by a dismounted operator and capable of seamlessly interoperating between air and ground forces.

“With the permission of the NSA, we can accelerate the time-to-market of how the US, FVEY, and coalition forces securely communicate and deter threats on the battlefield. “

The patented AN / PRC-161 BATS-D portable radio is ideal for providing full access to the Link 16 network to special operations and expeditionary forces of FVEY.

The security innovations of the Link 16 AN / PRC-161 BATS-D portable radio, including type 1 encryption, allow seamless interoperability with other Link 16 radios such as the low volume terminal of the system. Multifunctional Information Distribution (MIDS-LVT), MIDS Joint Tactical Radio System (MIDS JTRS) and KOR-24A Small Tactical Terminal (STT).

The radio also has the J-Voice capability for direct voice communications with other Link 16 users. This direct link between dismounted ground combatants and close air support aircraft dramatically shortens the chain of destruction.

The Viasat BATS-D enables the JTAC, FAC and TACP to find, repair and terminate the target exponentially faster with greater accuracy than ever before.

Viasat creates new ways to access advanced network applications with satellite and wireless network systems that enable fast, secure and efficient communications to any location.
