The think tank’s report released the 2023 US Military Strength Index on Tuesday, rating the US military as “weak” based on a comprehensive analysis of the US Army, Navy, Army of air, marine corps, space force and nuclear weapons.
The report analyzed that the capabilities of US fighter and bomber aircraft have dropped to 40% of the levels seen in the 1980s due to the delay in the purchase of F-35 aircraft and the lack of pilot exercises. The US Air Force‘s score went from “low” last year to “very low”. The report feared it was the lowest level in US Air Force history.
The number of Chinese naval vessels increased from 216 to 360 between 2005 and 2020, while only five battleships were newly joined during the same period, pushing the number of American warships from 291 to 296. The state US Army readiness was rated lower from “marginal” to “weak”. US Army was rated as “marginal”, while Space Force was rated “weak”.
Although US nuclear capabilities have been rated as “strong”, the report warns that transport systems and warheads have lost confidence with nuclear systems deteriorating over time.
In a section where the report assesses the level of global risk, North Korea’s behavior or threats were categorized as “test”, after “hostile” and “aggressive”. while his threats ability was classified as “gather”. Beyond nuclear deterrence, North Korea has worked to develop workable strategies for (nuclear) warfare, the report analyzes, adding that while the US’ extensive nuclear deterrence is considered to have deteriorated , the regime could probably consider the environment conducive to military behavior.
