Over the past 20 years, Silver Ships has built more than 650 Rigid Hull Inflatable Boats (RHIBs) for all branches of the U.S. military. Many of these ships are used by the US Navy to support the training and operational needs of ships, aviation, and naval special warfare. All boats are very versatile, rugged and designed to be operated on the high seas and in near shore environments. Silver Ships began building SSCs for the Navy in 2007.
âSilver Ships is delighted to receive this contract from the US Navy to build additional NSW SSCs and now the USCG SPC-LE,â said Shawn W. Lobree, Federal Contracting Officer for Silver Ships. âWe are very proud to help prepare the NSW and Coast Guard forces in our country. Quality, customer service and teamwork are very important to us and we look forward to working with the Navy and Coast Guard teams to build and deliver all five variants. Lobree is a retired Navy Captain and Program Manager for the project.
The new project involves the construction of five different vessel variants, all of which are RHIBs from the AMBAR series. The winning designs are closely based on Silver Ships’ in-service SSCs and were developed by the company’s in-house and highly creative engineering design team, led by Senior Naval Architect Clay Danielson. The craft will be built over the next five years.
NSW SSC (Surface Support Crafts) are 8 and 11 meter deep hull aluminum boats with a protective collar. Variants of the SSC include both open center console and cab versions. These boats are used from inland bays and waterways to deep water transits above the horizon, in all operating and weather conditions. Navy SSC ships will support the naval special warfare community through ocean divers and swimmer support, medical transport, ship towing, and water drop training, among other missions.
The 11-meter craft has a versatile bridge for transporting various payloads or mission equipment. Coast Guard SPC-LE’s 11-meter vessels are armed and will operate under varying conditions along the borders of the United States and the Caribbean. Typical SPC-LE missions are to intercept suspicious vessels entering US waters; the boats will also be used for port security. In addition to the US Coast Guard, other agencies of the Department of Homeland Security will operate some of the boats.
