Russian Navy warships track down enemy submarines in Black Sea exercises

Crews of small anti-submarine warships Kasimov and Yeisk discovered and eliminated a fictitious enemy submarine in the Black Sea during joint exercises of the Crimean and Novorossiysk naval bases of the Sea Fleet Black, the fleet press office reported on Tuesday.

The exercises of the two naval bases of the Black Sea Fleet began on September 20. The crews of small anti-submarine warships practice the techniques of constantly hunting down and eliminating an opposing submarine with torpedoes and rocket-propelled depth charges. The exercises involve a Ka-27PL anti-submarine warfare helicopter and a Be-12 amphibious anti-submarine aircraft, the press office said in a statement.

The crew of the submarine Veliky Novgorod simulated the fictitious enemy during the Black Sea exercises, the press office said.

The naval maneuvers brought together around 20 surface combatants and support vessels from the Black Sea Fleet, including anti-missile and anti-submarine warships, submarines, minesweeping forces from the fleet, auxiliary and rescue ships, planes and helicopters of its naval and air defense troops. Unmanned aerial vehicles provide visual control over the forces engaged in the exercises.
