SEBASTOPOL, December 11. / TASS /. Black Sea Fleet frigate Admiral Essen fired the Kalibr cruise missile system during exercises in the Black Sea, the fleet press office reported on Wednesday.

“In accordance with the combat training plan, the Black Sea Fleet frigate Admiral Essen fired the Kalibr missile system against a coastal target from a naval combat training range in the Black Sea . The crew of the frigate Admiral Essen launched a missile strike against the target coast while accomplishing the mission entrusted to it, “the press service said in a statement.

The missile successfully hit the target on the coastal firing range after traveling over 140 nautical miles (over 250 km) along a complex flight path. Unmanned aerial vehicles providing visual observation recorded that the missile accurately hit the target, the statement said.

The area in the Black Sea where the frigate carried out its missile launch has been closed to navigation for security reasons. A total of ten warships and support ships, as well as naval air force and Black Sea Fleet air defense planes and helicopters have helped close the area, the press office said.

The Black Sea Missile Fire is the second live fire exercise with the Kalibr precision missile system carried out by the crews of the new Black Sea Fleet frigates in accordance with planned combat training.

In August 2018, the crew of the frigate Admiral Grigorovich conducted the first live fire exercise with the Kalibr precision missile system, in which they successfully hit a naval target simulating a fictional enemy warship.

Admiral Essen represents a new series of project 11356R / M frigates (the designation of project 11357 is also used). These frigates are designed to destroy enemy ships and surface ships, submarines and ground installations, conduct patrols and defend sea lanes.

The frigates in this project are armed with eight Kalibr-NK cruise missile launchers capable of striking surface, coastal and underwater targets at distances of up to 2,600 km.

The warships in this project are also armed with Shtil-1, Palash and AK-630M artillery and air defense missile systems, 100mm A-190 universal artillery guns, torpedo tubes and RBU-6000 rocket launcher. The frigates also have a take-off and landing runway and a hangar for an anti-submarine warfare helicopter (Ka-27 or Ka-31).
